THE BEST BEACHES OF ISLAS DEL ROSARIO AND BARÚ CARTAGENA
Some of my most unforgettable vacations took place on one of these small islands, where white sand and turquoise waters steal the show. Just about an hour from La Bodeguita Dock or Los Pegasos Tourist Dock, a small archipelago of 28 islands welcomes you with its magic.
Located at the same latitude as the Barú Peninsula—another Cartagena gem we’ll tell you about today—these islands offer crystal-clear turquoise waters, exceptional cuisine, and all the comfort you could wish for in a Caribbean paradise.
To reach Barú, you can either drive or take public transportation—a journey of about an hour—or take a boat from the same docks mentioned earlier. Since 2014, a bridge connecting the island to Cartagena makes the trip by car possible.
Recognized worldwide as an attractive tourist destination, the islands of Cartagena are ideal for relaxation, soft white sand, transparent waters, thrilling adventures, and a wonderful marine life just waiting to be explored.
Here we have the best beaches of Islas Del Rosario and Barú, so stay at La Carta, because we’re here to help you plan your next getaway—a much-needed guide amid the many street vendors who may not offer the best advice like we do. Keep in mind: boats start departing from 8:00 a.m., sometimes even earlier, from La Bodeguita Dock or Los Pegasos Tourist Dock.
MOST BUDGET-FRIENDLY BEACHES OF ISLAS DEL ROSARIO AND BARÚ
Playa Blanca, Barú

Playa Blanca in Barú is a highly sought-after destination, both for locals and tourists from other cities and countries. Its easy access and proximity to Cartagena make it perfect for spending a full, sunny day under the palm trees and still returning in time for a delicious dinner in the historic center. Here, you’ll find water activities like kayaking and jet skiing. It’s a budget-friendly beach with accessible entry and affordable services.
-
Prices: Around 29 UDSD per adult and 25 USD for children aged 2 to 10 by boat.
If you prefer to go by land, take a bus from India Catalina statue (downtown Cartagena) to the town of Pasacaballos, and from there, a mototaxi to the beach for about 3 USD -
Facilities: You can stay overnight or choose just a day trip. Most boat tours include lunch, and depending on the season, you can rent beach chairs with umbrellas for about 8 USD
-
Gastronomy: Enjoy a traditional Caribbean lunch of fried fish with coconut rice, plantains, and salad. You’ll also find shrimp, octopus, and conch ceviches.
Note: Playa Blanca is a very popular and busy beach, especially among locals and visitors. It’s not ideal if you’re looking for peace and quiet, as the presence of street vendors and massage offers can be overwhelming at times.

Playa Tranquila
Just a few minutes’ walk from Playa Blanca, Playa Tranquila is—as its name suggests—a more peaceful spot where street vendors are far less present. Here, you’ll enjoy a calmer atmosphere, a better chance of spotting diverse marine life, and fewer commercial establishments like restaurants or shops.
Take the time to walk around and explore the area—there are plenty of beaches nearby, and you can decide which one best suits your vibe.
If you’re visiting Barú and want a party atmosphere, head to Playa Mambo, where alcoholic beverages like cocktails are plentiful. This beach features music, bars, Balinese beds, and lounge areas where you can relax with a good meal and Caribbean beats.
Looking for something smaller and even more serene? Try Playa Agua Azul, a tiny, turquoise beach perfect for relaxing.

If you’re visiting Cartagena with a clear goal in mind — to have the best party days — this beach might be your perfect choice. Cholón is a beach famous for its festive vibe, music, sunshine, and endless fun. Many tour plans include a long stop here to energize the group and give the island-hopping adventure that extra party flair. However, I recommend choosing a day trip that not only includes transportation and food but also unlimited drinks on board the boat.
- Prices: From 77 USD per adult for a day trip.

Don’t picture a typical beach party. Here, boats and speedboats gather in the bay, creating a floating dance floor where locals and travelers share the best Caribbean energy.
This beach is famous for its parties — many bachelor/bachelorette parties, birthdays, unconventional anniversaries, and any excuse to dance on the waves with crystal-clear waters are celebrated here. It can get quite crowded, but there are also times of the year when you’ll find a calmer atmosphere. Just 45 minutes from Cartagena.

In Isla Grande, within the Rosario Islands, we recommend a paradise that’s perfect for you and your friends if you want to celebrate a special occasion with white sand beaches, transparent waters, and a resident DJ to set the festive mood: Playa Mangata Club offers this from 90 USD per adult for a DAY PASS.

Lizamar is for those looking to combine a relaxing experience with aquatic attractions, offering additional services like visits to the Oceanarium, paddleboarding, diving, snorkeling, kayaking, and spa treatments. It’s the best choice for the whole family. A very attractive destination during high season and weekends, though not as chaotic as Playa Blanca in Barú.

Playa Isla del Encanto is undoubtedly another family-friendly destination, with facilities that include saltwater pools with jets and slides, relaxation areas, and delicious food — a great option if you want to unwind while your kids have fun.
Choose these other two options to visit the turquoise islands of Cartagena on your next vacation: Playa Isla Cocoliso and Playa Cocotera, both averaging 74 USD per person for a day trip, offering all the same services mentioned here in most tours — and one of them even includes a relaxing pool for your family.
BEACH WITH THE BLUEST WATERS OF ISLAS DEL ROSARIO
Playa Club Luxury

Barú and the Rosario Islands are known for their vibrant, crystal-clear blue waters, making it hard to choose just one spot as the bluest. But you’ll likely agree that the stunning blue of Playa Club Luxury is unmatched. Enjoy a mystical and peaceful sea that will leave you with unforgettable memories. It’s the perfect destination for sharing special moments with your partner or family.
- Prices: Starting from 93 USD, including round-trip transportation, unlimited drink bar, access to all areas, lounge chairs, and a lunch with three Caribbean-style options.
- Amenities and facilities: Sunshades, beach loungers, and an unlimited drink bar with specific beverages such as national beer, mojitos, gin and tonics, Coco Loco, piña coladas, and others.
- Gastronomy: If you’d like to choose something beyond the day-pass menu, the à la carte options are wide-ranging: Catch of the day fillet (fried, in garlic sauce, or with fine herbs), seafood rice, seafood pasta, grilled chicken, chicken stir fry, and a vegan option: vegetable chaufa rice.
This is undoubtedly a top tourist attraction in the Rosario Islands, though it never gets overwhelmingly crowded. You’ll also experience a fun party vibe — and yes, the unlimited drinks plan (with some limitations) means that a mojito, piña colada, or Coco Loco will surely boost your energy. Don’t miss the chance to enjoy this paradise.

Playa PA’UE and Playa Rosario del Mar, both in the Rosario Islands, also feature dream like crystal blue waters, perfect for a vibrant snorkeling adventure. Visit Playa Rosario del Mar for 93 USD (Reef Plan) or 120 USD (Fan Plan), and immerse yourself in calm waters and a long stretch of soft white sand. Its limited capacity makes it ideal for relaxing while enjoying the Caribbean flavors at lunch and soaking in the turquoise sea.
I know that many beaches of Islas del Rosario and Barú are making huge efforts toward sustainability and protecting local wildlife and ecosystems. I strongly encourage you, wherever you travel — in Cartagena or around the world — to take a moment to read each destination’s commitment to environmental conservation. It’s essential if we want to keep enjoying these dreamlike places.
If I had to choose my Top 3 beaches of Islas Del Rosario and Barú for my next vacation, they would be:
🌊 Playa Club Luxury for its blue waters and open bar,
🏝️ Playa PA’UE for its beauty and luxury, and

Final tip: In some beaches, the abundance of street vendors offering food, hotel services, excursions, and even massages can feel overwhelming. I recommend choosing a private or quieter beach like Playa San Pedro de Majagua or Playa Tranquila in Barú. And remember, a respectful and kind “no, thank you” goes a long way if you prefer to relax.
